This reel has work from the last couple years, spanning my time as a broadcast designer in Johannesburg, a digital designer in London and several freelance/personal projects.

The Think Again Fund (read more here & here) offered some good material to work with. Beginning with the idea of dreams, I came up with these illustrations that are quite friendly and cheerful and support the spirit of the campaign well.

These illustrations were used for the Think Again banner campaign in early 2009. Below is artwork from the development of these banners.

I worked on this microsite for Think Again, a fund/competition run by Stannah Stairlifts, while at Holst Digital in London.

This actually turned out to be a really nice project to work on. The Think Again Fund runs a competition for over-50′s where someone is chosen each month to live out a dream that they have never managed to accomplish – usually ballooning or skydiving or something. We won the pitch to create the microsite and it just went live now in March.

It was challenging in that we had to make it accesible and appealing to a very wide audience, from grandmas to grandkids, while still keeping it easy to run and update.

I was involved in the original concepting and strategising process and then designed the layouts under the direction of the creative director, Mads Holst.

This project basically involved translating the design of the original Flash site into an SEO-friendly HTML version. I designed the layouts and then prepared them to be sent on to the developer.

Unexpected Obstacles is a platform game created by Holst Digital for Timberland as part of their 2008 online campaign.

In the game you go from forest foothills to snowy mountain peak and have to overcome various obstacles along the way, including logs, flying boulders and killer bees to name but a few…

It was quite a complex project and with a small team of three working to a very tight deadline, I think it turned out very nicely.

I was responsible for the initial storyboarding and game layout as well as much of the environment design and all the player animations and pieces of video.  I was also heavily involved in directing the green screen shoot.

It was loads of fun to create and, being my first foray into online flash games, I learned a heap. I worked alongside Mads Holst, creative director at Host Digital, and Richard Guest, the action script specialist.

Yes, this site did indeed get me a design job in London! It is no longer live but you can see it here …

This site was born out of desperation! I was stuck in London with no job and an empty inbox no matter how hard I tried. So I made this site…

The inspiration for the site came from noticing how generic most design is, especially online. So I did a little research and compiled a list of ‘design cliches’ – then copied them!

I then sent out very simple mailers (a business card with the cryptic URL)…and…voilà! I got a job!!

Creature Workshop

This was a really fun internal project completed while working at StudioZoo in Johannesburg.

It was more of an morale-boosting exercise than a polished, finished product – an excuse to brush up on some AS.

We had everyone in the office create their own creatures, then printed them out & had a little competition.

It was a big group project where we had to create a site to showcase the Design Department. My role in the project was overall co-ordinator as well as interface designer.
