My reel for 2009.

This reel has work from the last couple years, spanning my time as a broadcast designer in Johannesburg, a digital designer in London and several freelance/personal projects.

These boards were developed as an alternative creative route for the final YouTube video but, like many good things in life, they ultimately never saw the light of day. The final video, which I also worked on, did turn out very well indeed though!

The challenge in coming up with a concept for this project was that all we had to work with was green screen footage of Timberland employees rambling on about Timberland’s ‘Earthkeeping’ creds. Somehow we had to create a compelling and coherent 2 minute clip out of it, and providing an interesting visual context was very important.

I went for a very graphical approach (partly because of budget restrictions) where I used various abstract and figurative vector graphics to help illustrate the themes and textures to create that gritty feel.

I think the boards turned out visually appealing without becoming cliched ‘earthy’…

Yes, this site did indeed get me a design job in London! It is no longer live but you can see it here …

This site was born out of desperation! I was stuck in London with no job and an empty inbox no matter how hard I tried. So I made this site…

The inspiration for the site came from noticing how generic most design is, especially online. So I did a little research and compiled a list of ‘design cliches’ – then copied them!

I then sent out very simple mailers (a business card with the cryptic URL)…and…voilà! I got a job!!

Below are some examples of the type of work I did:

This was an festive season ident I designed and animated for DStv’s Africa Magic channel. The channel’s imagery is very rich & textured, which worked well with the idea we had of creating this baobab with Christmas lights – a nice African twist to a Western tradition.

All the imagery was created in Photoshop and then animated in 3D layers in After Effects.

I created the title boards for this promo for DStv. This was pretty much standard fare for we while working at SudioZoo. I would get a rough edit of the promo from the Avid suite and would then have to design and animate title boards, normally using Photoshop & After Effects, to fit the theme of the promo. Turn around time for these kind of projects was usually 2 – 3 days (It was a busy studio!).

The idea for this promo was to integrate the titles into the edit as much as possible. I worked with an intern on designing the boards in Illustrator, then animated them myself in After Effects.

It was fun…

This was a TV ad we created at SudioZoo for the Sunday Times Food Show in Johannesburg. I received the artwork that had already been created for the print campaign and had to then translate it into animated boards for the TV commercial.

It was a really nice project to work on and turned out quite nicely despite having to work to a very tight deadline.

The starting point was illustrations of elements around the studio – such as USB symbols, cogs from Beta tapes, power buttons etc.

These elements were then used to build creatures and, in turn, their environment.

The result is quite unique and charming I reckon!

I also had loads of fun creating a “CREATURE WORKSHOP “…a simple little app that lets you create your own StudioZoo creature!!!

This was a really fun project to work on. It’s not often that you get free reign on a project and get to do it with friends!

I did all the design, directed the photoshoots (including taking the live shots) and liased with the printers on the final production. Loads of work but worth it!!!
